The Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus) is a striking winter visitor, celebrated for its silky plumage, bold black mask, and the red, wax-like tips on its wing feathers from which it takes its name. In this artwork, the bird is captured delicately feeding, its crest raised in quiet elegance.
Waxwings breed in the northern forests of Scandinavia and Russia, descending southward in irruptive flocks when berry crops fail. Their arrival is a spectacle, often seen clustered in groups, devouring rowan, hawthorn, and cotoneaster berries with insatiable appetite. Their trilling calls and synchronised movements lend a sense of magic to otherwise bare winter landscapes.
